Hiring a doula is an important step in your pregnancy journey. Doulas provide valuable resources so you can make educated decisions about your upcoming labor and deliver as well as emotional and physical support throughout both your pregnancy and labor. Should you decide to contact us at Rose Sparrow, here’s what you can expect.
When we receive your email, we’ll ask to setup a phone consultation. During that phone consultation, we’ll discuss your vision for your birth. We want to get to know you so we’ll ask about your family. As the conversation progresses, we need to identify some specifics such as where you plan to deliver, who is your provider and how far along is your pregnancy. Then we’ll go through the services we’ll provide with our basic package so you can decide if you’d like to do a free in-person consultation. We’d love to schedule that for the following week.
After our amazing call we’ll send you a follow-up email with any information we promised to send. If we didn’t schedule an in-person consultation, we’ll also ask when a good time to meet with you would be.
During that in-person consultation we’ll to go over our packet. You’ll receive some homework in the form of filling out your health history, birth preferences scale, and preparing your birth plan. Your doula team (that’s Brittney and Cindy 😉 ) will be available to answer any questions you have about the birth plan.
Around 36-38 weeks we would do a prenatal where we discuss your birth plan, practice comfort measures and positions. We’ll also discuss breastfeeding and your postpartum plan during the prenatal session. During this time we’ll also discuss with your birthing partner ways they can assist you through your labor.
It’s important to us to meet them where they’re at and make sure they are comfortable with the level of support they are able to provide. That may mean your partner holds space in the room with you, keeps your family and friends updated on your progress and getting you drinks. Or, your partner may feel more comfortable helping with positions, massage, and counter pressure. Whatever comfort level your partner is at, we’ll help identify that level and give tasks appropriate to that level.
When you go into labor or think labor is starting, please call us! Even if it’s 1 AM. It will be up to you when and where you want us to meet with you. We are happy to labor with you at your home before going to the hospital or birth center. If you’re birth is planned for home, we’ll come whenever you’re ready for us. During your labor, we can help you and your partner advocate for yourselves as to which procedures you want and which you prefer to decline by asking if you’d like time to think or like more information. For those who purchase our professional photography ad-on, between contractions or while your birth partner is supporting you we’ll take photos so you’ll have these precious moments to look back on.
Once we’re supporting you, we’ll stay with you throughout your labor and for another 1-2 hours after your baby is born to help you get comfortable and establish breastfeeding. If you’ve chosen to have us do professional photography, we’ll take photos during that first hour with your baby.
About a week after you’re home, we’ll do a postpartum visit. This visit is to see how you’re feeling, answer questions, identify questions you may have for the pediatrician or your provider and see how breastfeeding is going. Breastfeeding can be challenging for a first time parent so we can help troubleshoot or give you alternatives.
If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or send an email! We love to chat with our birthing families.
